What this does
The whole playlist is shuffled, not a slice of it. The result is a permutation: each video plays once before anything plays twice, and you can see the resulting order in the queue instead of guessing what comes next.
The order is kept, so leaving and coming back gives you the same shuffle rather than a fresh one. One button reshuffles when you want a different pass.
When you need it
Long music playlists, mix collections, background listening, a talks playlist you want to sample rather than work through. Anything where the first few hundred items should not be the only ones you ever hear.
What YouTube does instead
Shuffle play exists on any public playlist, and it is a button rather than a visible order: you cannot see what the queue became, so there is no way to tell which videos are still ahead of you. Nor does the shuffled order survive coming back later.
Here the shuffle is a list you can read. The order it produced is on screen, and it is still there tomorrow.
Questions
Is the shuffle actually random?
The queue is a full permutation of the playlist, generated in your browser. You can see the order it produced, and reshuffling gives you a different one.
Will videos repeat?
Not until the whole playlist has played once.
Does the playlist size matter?
Large playlists are loaded in batches before shuffling, so very long lists take a moment to build. The shuffle then covers all of them.
Can I keep the shuffled order?
Yes. The order is derived from a stored value, so it comes back the same after a reload or on your next visit, together with your position in it.
Does this work on playlists I do not own?
Yes, any public playlist.
